Ukraine: Kiev

The embassy was established in 1991? in temporary accommodation. In the early 1990s, a long lease was taken on a compound at 9 Desyatinna, in the Pecherskyi District, opposite the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building. The properties, old and with a large maintenance backlog, were converted to include embassy offices, ambassador’s residence and ancillary uses in the outbuildings.
A lease was also negotiated for a property just across the road, at 12 Desyatinna, with a view to its development for embassy staff residential accommodation. The lessors, however, reneged at the last minute and retook possession for their own development scheme. A number of residential units were instead bought for staff and brought up to acceptable standards.
