Greece gained independence from the Ottoman Empire during the 1820s and was declared a kingdom under the protection of Great Britain, France and Russia in 1829. Otto I was enthroned in 1833, and the Greek government moved from Navplion to Athens in the following year. James Dawkins was appointed Britain’s first minister in 1833.
The mission transferred to London for the duration of the Greek government’s exile there 1941-44. Its status was raised from legation to embassy in 1942.
