The capital of Brazil formally moved from Rio de Janeiro to Brasilia in 1960. The British embassy followed in 1972, and moved into new purpose-built accommodation in 1983.

Rio de Janeiro became a consulate-general, as Sao Paulo remained.

Petropolis was the summer residence for Rio de Janeiro from before its purchase in 1910 until its sale in 1968.
